Released in 1958, Kala Pani is a Hindi crime thriller directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Dev Anand under the Navketan Films banner. It stars Dev Anand, Madhubala, and Nalini Jaywant, blending suspense, romance, family loyalty, and memorable music. The story follows Karan Mehra, a young man who discovers that his father, long believed dead, is serving a life sentence for murder. Convinced of his father's innocence, Karan investigates a crime from fifteen years earlier, confronting hidden secrets and unexpected adversaries.
Along the way he meets Asha, a spirited journalist played by Madhubala, whose intelligence and warmth bring romance and hope into his journey. Nalini Jaywant plays Kishori, a woman whose knowledge of the past becomes crucial to the search for justice.
The result is an emotional mystery about courage, sacrifice, and restoring a loved one's dignity. A film with a remarkable legacy Kala Pani was adapted from the 1955 Bengali film Sabar Uparey, which drew inspiration from A. J. Cronin's novel Beyond This Place. Dev Anand received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and Nalini Jaywant won Best Supporting Actress.
Its soundtrack was composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Songs including Achha Ji Main Haari Chalo Maan Jao Na and Hum Bekhudi Mein Tumko Pukare Chale Gaye remain enduring favourites.
